GIS Job Opportunities

Congratulations to rising senior and GIS Student Assistant Darin Rockwell, Geography/Geology ’13, for landing a very competitive GIS internship for summer 2012 with Lockheed Martin. Currently ranked #58 on the Fortune 500 listLockheed Martin is a

global security and aerospace company that employs about 123,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.

GIS is integrated across Lockheed Martin’s operations and the company recently joined the ESRI Partner Network in order to

collaborate [with ESRI] on technologies to put online geospatial apps and services in the hands of more military, intelligence, homeland security and emergency response users worldwide…  Lockheed Martin and Esri have previously worked together on several geospatial-intelligence programs for the U.S. Government and international customers. The companies will continue to collaborate on future geospatial opportunities for global customers, with a focus on enterprise GIS solutions that connect desktop and mobile users across a range of devices with a secure worldwide network.

Hopefully at some point this summer we’ll be able to get a guest blog post from Darin about his internship (assuming of course he’s allowed to talk about it!).

GIS Job Opportunities – Azavea

In previous posts, I’ve mentioned some of the cool projects that Azavea (a GIS consulting firm in Philly) is involved in.  Things like…

Well, here’s your chance to spend a summer working for them. Azavea recently announced a paid internship program for Summer 2012 – but you have to move fast to make the April 2nd application deadline.  Here’s the write-up with details and an application form from the Azavea Summer of Maps homepage.

We are pleased to announce the first Azavea Summer of Maps. Inspired by the Google Summer of Code, Summer of Maps is a program that offers stipends to student GIS analysts to perform geospatial data analysis for non-profit organizations. We are going to match up non-profit organizations that have spatial analysis needs with talented students of GIS analysis to implement projects over a three-month period during the summer.

What’s in it for the students?

  • Work on a spatial analysis project that supports the social mission of a non-profit organization
  • Work with Azavea mentors to improve your GIS skills
  • Receive a monthly stipend
  • Gain work experience implementing a GIS project

Key dates:

Mar 21 – April 2 – Students submit proposals and applications

April 2 – 13 – Top candidates are interviewed in Philadelphia

April 16 – Azavea announces successful Summer of Maps fellows

May 14 – August 31 – Summer of Maps fellows work on spatial analysis projects

GIS could help you get into grad school (and get funding!)

In recent posts I’ve given examples of how GIS can help you find an internship during your undergraduate years (click here to read more) and/or help you land a job once you have graduated from Bucknell (click herehere and here to read more).  Having experience with GIS as an undergraduate can also help you get into grad school (and get funding!).

Nick Gonsalves, Geography ’11, is a great example. In addition to taking Prof. Duane Griffin’s GEOG204 ‘Applied GIS’ course, Nick used GIS as one of the key research methodologies for his senior honors thesis. For his thesis, Nick reconstructed the historical vegetation of Union County during the early historical era (1755-1855) to assess the relationship between topography and vegetation, as well as the impact of European settler tree cutting on vegetation. Nick’s undergraduate experience with GIS and his ability to apply the technology in developing his honors thesis was surely a factor in his acceptance and funding for graduate studies in the University of Georgia’s Geography Department.

Now that he’s in the graduate program at UGA, Nick continues to use GIS for class projects (such as researching the distance food travels from the farm to the farmer’s market in Athens, GA) and for developing his Master’s thesis.  He’s also continuing to present the results of his senior honors thesis from Bucknell – including participating in a poster session at this year’s American Association of Geographers conference in NYC (see below – click on image for a larger version of the poster).
