2011 Student Paper Competition – URISA

June 6th is the deadline for submitting papers to the 2011 URISA Student Paper Competition.  The competition is open to all grad students and any undergraduates with 12 or more credit hours. Read below for some general information and guidelines. Click here for details:

The objective of the Competition is to challenge students to demonstrate the development and effective use of Geographic Information Systems in both their field of study and in the community.  The following types of papers are encouraged:

  • Comprehensive literature review on a geographic information science, spatial technologies and their application.
  • Application of spatial statistics.
  • Application of an implemented geographic information system or other spatial technology and its demonstrable impact on a public or private sector organization.
  • Treatment and development of geographic information systems, spatial technologies and theory.

Theses will not be accepted. A summary paper based on a thesis or research performed while completing a thesis, is acceptable.

Conservation map competition

Sponsored by Esri and the Society for Conservation GIS

ESRI and the Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) are sponsoring a map competition. Deadline is midnight, March 15th, 2011. Entries must use ArcGIS software and have a focus on an existing conservation project or program. See list of prizes below. Click here for more info.

iExplorePAtrails Mobile Competition

Harrisburg University and the PADCNR recently announced the iExplorePAtrails Mobile Competition. The contest encourages developers from PA universities and beyond to develop mobile applications that combine data on PA trails with other data and user content. The goal is to create ‘mash-ups’ that encourage use of Pennsylvania’s 1,000s of miles of trails and enhance the fun that trail users can have. GIS-T conference to be held in Hershey, PA this year

Attention all engineering students focusing on transportation: the AASHTO GIS for Transportation Symposium will be held March 28-March 30th in Hershey, PA this year.  The deadline for students to submit posters for the map gallery is March 18th.  Click here for more details on the conference and here for guidelines for poster submissions.
